Rules
There is a lot of basic information, that as parents, you need to know. Please read carefully and retain for future reference. Direct any questions you may have to Michael or Dyan George.
GOALS - Our goals are to promote the sport of wrestling with a direct focus on good sportsmanship, team spirit, friendship, and to have fun. We want this experience to be a pleasant one for you and your child. Please come and join in the fun.
FEES – The fee to join the Kirksville Kids Wrestling Club is $65.00. This helps cover the cost of the mandatory USA Wrestling Card, insurance, and entry to our Kirksville Junior Tiger Classic tournament.
EQUIPMENT - Singlets will be provided by the Kirksville Kids Wrestling Club. They are property of the club and need to be returned promptly at the end of the wrestling season. Wrestling shoes are required for tournaments and practices. Wrestling shoes must be worn only in the wrestling room and at tournaments. Headgear is mandatory while wrestling. Athletic tape may also be needed.
PRACTICES - Practices are held every Monday and Thursday evening from 6:00pm - 8:30pm in the Kirksville Middle School. Practice times may be split between novice and experienced wrestlers. Wrestlers should wear a t-shirt and comfortable, loose fitting shorts with no zippers, buttons, or snaps. Due to school regulations, only wrestlers and coaches will be allowed in wrestling room. Wrestlers will need to dress-out in the locker room or caffateria and leave all coats, bags, extra clothes, etc. downstairs. No food or drinks are allowed in wrestling room.
TOURNAMENTS - We encourage you to have your child participate in as many tournaments as possible. Competition is the best experience and the most fun for the wrestler. However, no wrestler is obligated to enter any tournaments. The fee is generally $10-$15 per tournament. See our schedule page for a list of tournaments. There will be sign-up sheets at practice and registration deadlines for each tournament. Entry fees must be paid prior to registration deadlines. Once registered, fees are non-refundable. At the tournaments, your child will be placed in an 8-man bracket, a 16-man bracket, or a round robin bracket. Tournaments are held on Saturdays & Sundays and usually have weigh-ins the night before or the morning of the tournament. Please check each tournament brochure for details. Parents are not allowed at matside unless you have a coaches card. Wrestlers need to clip nails before tournaments and practices. Shoe laces must be covered with tape or lace covers.
KIRKSVILLE TOURNAMENT - We will also host our own tournament. Parents will be expected to help in the preparation of and on tournament day. This is your club and it is ran by volunteers. It is your responsibility as a parent and a wrestler to help keep your club successful. A parent planning meeting will be held at a later date.
STATE TOURNAMENT SERIES - These are usually held in March. It is a three tournament series(Districts, Regionals, & State). Any wrestler age 7 by January 1st is eligible to compete at Districts. Wrestlers must qualify at each tournament in order to advance to the next. Every wrestler (age 7 & up) is strongly encouraged to compete in the state series.
WEIGHT - The club does not encourage weight loss for the wrestlers. A wrestler is not bound to a certain weight for the entire season. The weight classes are generally in 5 pound increments and can be changed as needed. But, the weight you sign up for, for a particular tournament, is typically binding. If your child does not make weight, he/she may not be able to wrestle. (Entry fees are non-refundable.) If you have any questions, please ask.
GOOD HYGIENE - Wrestling is a close contact sport and some skin infections are contagious; the best prevention is a thorough shower. Bathing is required after every practice and tournament. Please regularly wash workout clothes and disinfect wrestling gear. If your child has ANY type of skin infection, he/she must see a physician and get the USA Wrestling Skin Form filled out before participating in ANY practices or tournaments.
BIRTH CERTIFIATE - We must have a copy of your child's birth certificate on file in order to be eligible to participate. This is a requirement of the Missouri USA Wrestling Association.
MATCH/RECORD KEEPING - Parents will be given a sheet to keep track of their child's wins and losses. This includes getting the opponents name and club affiliation, and actual score. This record will enable the coaches to seed (place) your wrestler at the best possible position for the District tournament. Extra brackets are printable from our statistics page.
E-MAIL – In an attempt to save time and money for copies, we would like to have e-mail addresses. If this in not an option, we will have paper copies at practice.
WEBSITE - The address is www.kidssportsnet.com/wrestling/kirksville. You can check here for updates, tournament schedules, forms, statistics and even pictures of your wrestler.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT - Wrestling is a very challenging and demanding sport for both the wrestler and the parent. Be supportive and offer encouragement to your wrestler as much as possible. Remember, wrestling is your child’s activity, and we, as parents, need to make sure they are having fun. There is an excellent Parent Guide to Youth Wrestling linkable from our website. We encourage you to take the time to read it.
LET'S HAVE A GREAT WRESTLING SEASON!!!
