Once upon a time....

An alliance of alien species called the Covenant is bent on destroying Earth and the entire human race. As the Covenant moves through the galaxy, coming closer and closer to Earth, something must be done. The captain of a human ship makes a desperate attempt to stop the aliens from destroying Earth by acting as a decoy and flying off into deep space in hopes they will follow.
The aliens, intent on killing every last human they encounter, do just that. When all is said and done, they end up on a massive ring construct called Halo, which orbits a gas giant in much the same way as the rings around Saturn do. This gas giant seems strikingly similar to Earth with its terrestrial environment, and so sets the stage for the conflict. The ring was created by some long-forgotten alien race, who have disappeared, though where they've gone, no one really knows

You take the form of a group of marines who aren't just defending the construct, but fighting for the safety of the human race. You have no weapons, they all went down in a scatter when the ship crashed on the Halo, so you must search to find your weapons. Until then your only defense is your guerilla tactics and your instinct for survival

As the game evolves, you learn exactly why the Covenant is fighting so hard for the abandoned construct. The technology on the ring is far more advanced than anyone could have imagined, so harnessing this technology would give the human race the upper hand. The construct is far more than an abandoned ring with some useful technology however, it's an important discovery that could significantly advance the human race
