Mt. Baldy League 2
Glen Helen Park- Unstable and rough 3 miles
A great showing by some of the runners in varsity showing that they ready for CIF in less than a month! Gustavo, Juan L., and some others in JV are improving their game. The course is not an easy one, with the winning time in the low 16s by Sammy.
Now for the Runnies:
Athlete of the Meet(Boys): Gustavo Cruz, finishing seconds behind Sammy.
Athlete of the Meet(Girls): Valerie Strawn, with a great performance!
Best kick: The end race between our newer JV runners.
Biggest PR: Being a slow course, there were no PRs.
Biggest suprise: Gustavo and Juan's huge improvements.
Funniest moment: Victor going number one on the tree near the starting line.
Best supporter: Garza, although injured, it doesn't stop him from supporting the team.
Mt. Baldy 1st League Meet
Chaffey High School- 3 flat miles
Pretty good showing at the first league meet with Daniel Garza sitting out. The top 7(counting Garza) are now all under 17 minute runners. Sammy wins the race at 15:29, even after making a wrong turn. Victor PRs at 15:57, Gustavo at 16:01, and Jonathan at 16:07. JV has a nice showing too, with Juan winning in the 17s. Newcomer freshman Isaac Mejia lowers his PR by another minute to 18:20 for three miles with less than two weeks of practice. Will he make it to varsity by finals?
And return of the awards I call the "Runnies"...
Athlete of the Meet(Boys): Sammy Sanchez, taking charge of the race.
Athlete of the Meet(Girls): Jill Spolar, nearly breaking 20!
Best kick: Brandon "Freshie" Duyan, always finishing strong.
Biggest PR: New freshman runner Eric, cutting down his PR by 3 minutes!
Biggest suprise: The wrong turn/fall 800m into the race.
Funniest moment: Garza at the starting line.
Best supporter: The girls team takes the cake here, cheering everyone on.

Post Prelims notes
Nov. 12, 2005
It's hard to tell how everything will go next week or the week after. With our lower varsity runners struggling at Mt. SAC, the race will be unpredictable.
My guess is the roster for CIF will be Alex, Stomps, Garza, Cesar, Victor, Chris, and Sammy. Any one of the top three can win CIF on their own. Cesar's back and his state is still unknown. Will he come back with his best race in high school or will he drop back again? Victor has constently ran in the mid 16s in previous races, but has failed to do so at Mt. SAC so far. 3rd time's a charm? Chris and Sammy are still very new to varsity and cross country in general. Both are just as big as wild cards as Cesar.
Four of the top seven are unpredictable. Will everything come together? Or will everything fall apart?
Mt. Baldy League Finals- 3 Miles
Nov. 4, 2005
Lots of big suprises from the runners at finals in Bonelli Park. The course had some good size hills, looping around a few times. Varsity went on without Ramiro, where Victor covered as the number four man perfectly. Chris had a suprising race, finishing as the 5th man with a time of 16:48! After the race he sped off to play in the Lugo varsity football game later that night!
JV did a great job with several people really stepping up. Cesar is making progress on his return, easily winning the JV title around 17:20. Freshie and Ji took 2nd and 3rd, while new comers Justin and Jonathan Monteon taking 5th and 6th!
On the girls side, Markie runs possibly her best race yet with 17:56 on this hilly course! She might make Lugo history as the first girl to go to CIF Finals!
And now, the Runnies...
Athlete of the Meet(Boys): Cesar Mercado. The comeback kid!
Athlete of the Meet(Girls): Markie Voyles, like always!
Best kick: Sammy Sanchez, outkicking another runner!
Biggest PR: Jonathan Monteon, finishing in the top 5 in JV. Only joined the team less than a month ago!
Biggest suprise: The amazing preformances of Chris, Markie, Cesar, and Jonathan!
Funniest moment: Lugo's disorganized award ceramony, starring Matt and Markie.
Best supporter: Suprise alumni runner Fitsum Tesfa coming from the longest distance to cheer on the guys.
Best picture shot: None so far.

Mt. SAC Invite- 2.91 Miles

Varsity didn't have the race everyone was hoping for but it was still a solid race. Stomps showed he was getting back into shape while Garza ran an impressive 15:23. Ramiro ran the best race in the season running 16:31.
The boys of JV had great races, with nearly everyone around the 18's. Chris went even faster and ran 17:48!
On the girls side, Markie finished second barely beaten by another top female runner. The others ran a good 22-24 spread.
Now for a smaller "Runnies"...
Athlete of the Meet(Boys): Ramiro Soto, showing we only need a number five to tear it up at CIF!
Athlete of the Meet(Girls): Vanessa Munoz, running an impressive time for a tough course.
Biggest PR: Ramiro! Very smart race.
Biggest suprise: Many alumnis (Alfred Hernandez, Erick Maldonado, Sunshine, Ruben Ramirez, Brian Roser, plus others) showing up to support the team!
Funniest moment: Mega spoon-athon involving Alfred, Ji, Ramiro and others.
Best supporter: Alumni Erick M. came down from San Francisco to talk and support the team, and cheered in all the races.

Great showing today in the season's second league meet. Alex, Daniel, and Stomps went 1,2,3 together at around 15:27 at this hilly course.
On the girl's side, Markie wins with a fast time of 18:39. She even stopped at the mile mark because she didn't know what direction to go!
JV runs an awsome showing with 17 points going 1,2,3,5,6. Sammy wins the race in 18:00. He only recently came back for a week from injury!
Now here comes the "Runnies"....

I.E. Championships- 3 Miles

I wasn't at the race so I can't say much. All I know was it was the worst race of the season. Maybe things will look better by Mt. SAC.

Woodbridge Invite-3 miles
Sept. 17, 2005
Unfortunately the varsity team ran a sub-par race in the sweeps race when they were unable to get out in time. With so many people in the race, they were trapped and unable to run faster.
JV ran some nice times, with Ji Chong running the fastest of the group in the junior race in 17:40.
The girls did great as usual with Markie running an impressive 17:53, PRing by over a minute last week!

And of course, here are the "runnie" awards.
Athlete of the Meet(Boys): Ji Chong
Athlete of the Meet(Girls): Markie Voyles, again!
Best kick: Jonathon Munoz. Very impressive.
Biggest PR: Markie PRing by over a minute!
Biggest suprise: Markie's 3rd place finish in the varsity race.
Funniest moment: The freshmen Sammy Sanchez and Jorge Munoz: "Who's Pre?"
Best supporter: Jillian Spolar, even nice enough to take lots of pics!
Best picture shot: None so far (haven't seen them).
Don Bosco Invite- 3 miles
Sept. 10, 2005
It was a great day for the younger and new members of the team on both boys and the girls side. Markie won the freshman girls race and nearly ran into the guy on the bike. Sammy could have won the freshman boys race, but he injured himself during the race and dragged himself to a second place finish. He even held off the guy trying to outkick him! Victor finished in 6th for the sophmore race while Garza wins the junior race with the fastest time of the day with 14:55.

Sunset in the Park- 2.8 miles
August 18, 2005
Unfortunately for Lugo, they have broken the seven year winning streak at this event. Lugo came in 3rd place. The good news is Daniel Garza came in 1st with the time of 14:54 and Alex Mercado came in 15:10 in second.
